Peter Obi reacts to FG Decision to Close Abuja Unity School Over Insecurity

Published

on

The presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, Mr. Peter Obi has reacted to plans by the Federal Government to shut down one of its colleges, the Federal Government College Kwali, located in Kwali Area Council over security threats.

It was reported that due to emerging security threats from terrorists, the Federal Government has directed the National Examination Council to hasten the conduct of examinations for final-year students.

According to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, the closure became necessary following a security breach on Sheda and Lambata villages, suburbs of Kwali Area Council, which also threatened FGC, Kwali.

Reacting, Peter Obi said the proposed closure was not only worrisome, but depressing.

He urged the Buhari-led government to be proactive and do all within its power to arrest the high level of insecurity in the nation.

”As a firm believer in the transformative role of education, I am saddened by how education in Nigeria has continued to be stifled by insecurity, avoidable industrial action of unions and poor funding, all arising from poor governance.

”The affected students of these colleges, when added to the millions of students already languishing at home due to ASUU Strike and the 18.5 million out-of-school children roaming the streets, all add to the painful burden that slows the nation down on its journey to development.

”While I understand this decision by the government as a measure of keeping our students safe, I reiterate that insecurity can be fought permanently by lifting people out of poverty, through support for small businesses and the creation of jobs, adequately employing more training and equipping our security personnel.

”The government, in keeping to its duties of protecting the lives of citizens, must be proactive in its actions. I urge the government to do all within its power to arrest the high level of insecurity in the nation, to enable our students safely return to schools, and for our nation to return to the part of progress,” he tweeted.

Music star, Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe, also known as Kizz Daniel has allegedly been arrested by the Tanzanian Police.

Kizz Daniel was arrested for not showing up at his scheduled concert.

He was scheduled to perform at the Warehouse, Old Nextdoor Arena in Tanzania on Sunday but did not show up to the venue.

Disgruntled fans had taken to social media, expressing displeasure over the Singer’s failure to show up on Sunday.

Reports said the ‘Buga’ crooner refused to mount the stage because he allegedly forgot his travelling bag in Uganda and didn’t want to wear borrowed clothes.

However, the angry fans who reportedly paid $5000 for tables were seen hurling bottles at each other and destroying properties at the event centre.

A viral video of the arrest showed the singer wearing a hooded jacket and being led into a police vehicle.

This is the second time the singer has failed to perform at a fully booked concert while fans waited.

He had last month kept fans waiting for hours at his DMV concert in New York but later blamed his no-show on immigration challenges.

The Benue State Security Council has restricted the operations of commercial motorcycles, also known as Okada in the state.

Henceforth, commercial motorcycle operators would only be allowed to operate from 6am to 8pm everyday until further notice.

The security council took the decision at its emergency held on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, Governor Ortom stated however that the earlier outright ban on the use of motorcycles in the Sankera geopolitical zone comprising Katsina-Ala, Logo and Ukum still subsists.

He said the decision followed the recent security alarm raised by the Nasarawa State government and what is happening in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and other parts of the country.

The Governor emphasized that the decision to restrict the activities of commercial motorcycles was aimed at nipping in the bud the resurgence of criminal elements suspected to be moving into the state.

The Governor stated that security agencies in the state have been mandated to enforce the new regulations, saying stiff penalties such as arrest and prosecution awaits anyone found flouting the order.

The security council also resolved that all heavy-duty vehicles coming into the state, with covered tarpaulins would be searched at designated checkpoints along routes in and out of the state with the contents thoroughly checked before being allowed to pass.

He also disclosed that the 500 personnel of the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards, which will be formally launched on Thursday, August 4th, 2022 to complement conventional security agencies in the state have been trained and kitted with an additional five hundred expected to begin training next week.

The Governor who said the Community Volunteer Guards would work with the traditional rulers and other security agencies in fighting crime expressed optimism that being members of the communities, it would be easier for them to fish out criminals.

Governor Ortom noted that the Security Council also approved a committee headed by the SSG, Professor Tony Ijohor to work towards regulating the activities of miners, which he said have been causing environmental hazards.

Other members of the committee include the Commissioner for Lands and Solid Minerals, Hon. Bernard Unenge, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Micheal Gusah and Adviser on Mining, Andrew Kputu as well as the chairmen and second class chiefs of Gboko, Kwande, Ogbadibo and Logo as members.
